Parenting & Child Behavioural Therapy
Emotional and behavioral problems during childhood and adolescence are a common concern for parents. A child’s emotional and behavioural problems will likely result in consequences in their daily life, including their school attendance, ability to learn and capacity to develop positive family and other social relationships.
Behavioural Parenting Training (BPT) teaches constructive parenting skills and techniques for improving children’s behavioural problems such as aggression, defiance, hyperactivity and temper tantrums. Behavioural Parenting Training is also an effective approach to manage more severe childhood disruptive behaviours such as oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), conduct disorder (CD), and other childhood-onset conditions like attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and Autistic Spectrum Disorders.
At New Directions Psychology, we are able to provide best practice BPT Programs to address most child emotional and behavioral issues in order to reduce disruptive behaviour in your children through positive reinforcement and behaviour shaping, and improve their emotional wellbeing and development.
See below for more information on Triple P, one of our preferred methods of BPT.
Triple P
Who benefits from Triple P?
Whilst initially developed to assist parents of children with specific behavioural problems, research has identified the advantages of the program as a universal parenting support strategy. Parenting issues can range from day-to-day stress and relationship difficulties to more severe and repetitive emotional or behavioural problems. Triple P provides a set of skills and strategies that can assist parents deal with these issues in a positive, consistent and decisive way, whilst at the same time encouraging a parenting environment that helps to encourage and promote the development of their children.
What is Triple P?
Triple P - Positive Parenting Program is a system of well-researched and validated parenting skills that aims to promote positive and caring relationships between parents and their children, to encourage desired behaviour in children and to help develop effective management strategies for dealing with undesired child behaviour problems.
Whilst Triple P is very effective in improving child behaviour problems, much of its emphasis is on developing positive parenting attitudes, skills and behaviour. This allows for improved family relationships that will themselves encourage children to more desired behaviour and enable them to realise their full potential.
Triple P can be delivered as an individual therapy model or in a group format. A group mode of delivery has the advantages of allowing for normalisation of the parenting experience as well as providing the opportunity for support, friendship and constructive advice from other parents. It is a multi-session program that is ideally presented to groups of 10 -12 parents/families. The program allows for active involvement by parents and the chance to learn new knowledge and skills through observation, discussion, active practice and feedback.
